Cozy hats are totally vogue!
Hats have quite an interesting history in fashion.
Here are some interesting facts about hats:
Black taxis in London for their notorious tall roofs. Do you know why? That is because these particular taxis were designed to accommodate the Bowler hat.
Queen Elizabeth I created a rule that everyone over the age of seven had to wear a hat on Sundays and Holidays.
Once upon a time, hats were literally dangerous. Really! You see, back in the day, the process of making hats included felting. Back then, in order to keep the wool in place, mercury was used. It was discovered later, after hat wearers became affected that the mercury was affecting the nervous system of the person wearing the hat.
Did you know that the hard hats worn on construction sites are color coded? Well generally speaking, the white colored ones for the engineers, the blue one for technical supervisors, the yellow one for laborers, and the green one for safety inspectors.
If you are in the business of selling hats, your name changes based on your gender. For example, a male business owner selling hats is referred to a hatter. That’s obvious enough. However a female business owner selling hats is referred to as a milliner.
Hat History
Next up is the ‘dunce’ hat. If you are unfamiliar with this name, perhaps you have seen it on television somewhere. You know, that kid sitting in the corner of the classroom wearing something that looks like a street cone on his head, except the dunce cap ends with a pointy tip. You’ve seen it, right?
Well, get this. The history of this dunce hat is something worth noting. Did you know that while, in modern day circles, that hat represent the not so smart student or some form of punishment. Here’s how the ‘dunce’ hat became infamous.
It started with John Dun Scotus, a man who I can only refer to as one of four great philosophers of High Scholasticism. Isn’t that ironic? Oh, there’s more. This outstanding intellect created the ‘dunce’ hat design as a way to increase his wisdom.
Yes, there were people who respected his well-known intelligence and believed him and even believed that the ‘dunce’ hat gave them a connection to the Gods.
Against the Law
Are you intrigued yet? Excellent! How about this? Back in 1922, it became unlawful to wear a straw hat after the 15 of September every year. From this date, you could only wear was a felt hat. The punishment for this crime was a severe beat down.
Have you ever heard of a ‘Stetson’ hat? I bet you probably did, considering the company has been making them since the 1800s. Now, the cost of a ‘Stetson’ cowboy hat start from $200 to $1000. Now, that might seem a bit steep for a mere cowboy hat. But is the ‘Stetson’ just a mere cowboy hat?
Consider this, in the early 1900s, a ship sunk with a ‘Stetson’ on board the wrekage, and there it remained for 14 years, until it was recovered with the wreckage. Here’s the jaw-dropper. That ‘Stetson’ that was marinating under the sea for 14 years was merely hosed and look brand-spanking new.
